I believe that the announcement of a $2.1billion investment in the Falkland Islands by Navitas Petroleum Development and Production Ltd and Rockhopper Exploration Plc can offer opportunities to the supply chain in the North-east.
I visited the Falkland Islands earlier this year as a guest of the Falklands Islands Government, and I’m keen that the expertise and supply chain available in the North-east is well-placed to take advantage of potential opportunities.
This is a big announcement for the Falkland Islands but can potentially also be good news for offshore supply chain companies based here in the North-east.
I want to ensure that the existing well of expertise and personnel built up over many years of supplying the North Sea industry can take full advantage of what I expect will be a range of opportunities available as a result of this investment decision.
We are still in the early stages of the Just Transition and while work towards that continues to build, we still need oil and gas and the supply chain still needs to have meaningful opportunities to bid for contracts.
