I’m very pleased to support this local sustainable food project for school children in the North-east entitled ‘Give Peas a Chance!’
‘Give Peas A Chance!’ works to bring locally grown organic split peas into school meals, while simultaneously supporting valuable businesses in the Moray area.
At a report launch in Westminster for this initiative, I learnt more about the wider ‘Bridging the Gap’ programme which brings together nine pilot projects that supply locally sourced organic food to more than 73,000 children in schools and 2,500 households across the UK. One of these pilots is a collaborative project between Soil Association Scotland and Moray Council, aimed at delivering fresh, healthy, and sustainable food to school children’s plates in the local area – with a particular focus on peas.
Phil Swire, the pea producer from Balmakewan Farm, who attended this event has provided split peas that are being used in everything from soups to brownies and cookies.
This initiative is part of a wider project having already worked in Aberdeen city and other North-east councils, with support from the Royal Highland Education Trust (RHET) and the Royal Northern Countryside Initiative (RNCI).
