During this week of awareness, I’ll be wearing a ribbon to show my support for patients with and families affected by neutropenic sepsis.
The statistics are stark, with 60% of blood cancer deaths due to sepsis. However, currently only 0.4% of current research funds are used to target this hidden crisis. Given that there are 40,000 new cases of blood cancer diagnosed in the UK annually, targeted funding for research into this condition is vital to save lives.
At an event in parliament to raise awareness, I will be joining with MPs across the House to learn more about the importance of research into this condition from the Jibraan Chaudharry Sepsis Research Foundation.
This Foundation was set up to advance the cause for research and treatment for chemotherapy associated sepsis, and as a lasting legacy to the founder and trustee’s son, Jibraan Nveed Chaudharry, who very sadly died of sepsis associated with chemotherapy for Acute Myeloid Leukaemia.
Sepsis in Leukaemia Awareness Week runs from November 16th to 23rd.
