  • Guidance for attending this Community Surgery

  • Shamus Logan MP holds regular advice surgeries to support constituents with issues where parliamentary or government assistance may be helpful. To ensure the best possible service, please take note of the following guidance before attending.

    • Proof of Address: A recent utility bill, bank statement, council tax bill, or official letter to confirm you live in the constituency.

    • Relevant Documents: Any letters, forms, or reference numbers relating to your case (for example: correspondence from government departments, council, or agencies).

    • Notes on Your Issue: A brief written summary of the problem or concern helps us to understand your situation quickly and accurately.

    • Photo ID (if available): To help us verify identity where necessary.

    What to Expect

    • Private Meeting: You will meet with Shamus Logan MP or a member of his casework team in a confidential setting.

    • Time Allocation: Surgeries are often busy; appointments are usually limited to around 10–15 minutes. If your case is complex, further follow-up may be arranged.

    • Next Steps: After your meeting, the casework team will advise you on what action can be taken and will update you as progress is made.

    • Respect and Fairness: Everyone will be treated with courtesy, and we ask that all visitors extend the same courtesy in return.

    Zero Tolerance Policy

We want surgeries to be safe and welcoming for everyone. We therefore operate a strict zero tolerance policy on:

    • Aggressive, threatening, or abusive behaviour (verbal or physical).
    • Discrimination or harassment of any kind.
    • Disruption of the surgery environment.

Anyone behaving in this way will be asked to leave immediately and may be reported to the police.

  • What MP's can help with

  • An MP represents constituents in the UK Parliament and can:

    • Raise issues with government departments on your behalf (e.g. Home Office, DWP, HMRC, DEFRA, MoD).

    • Help with problems involving government services such as:

      • Benefits, pensions, and Universal Credit.

      • Immigration, visas, and passports.

      • Tax and National Insurance.

      • NHS and healthcare policy (though not individual treatment decisions).

      • Policing and justice matters at a national level.

    • Take up cases with regulators or public bodies, such as Ofgem or Ofcom.

    • Present petitions and speak in debates to highlight local or national concerns.

    • Assist with housing issues where central government policy is involved (though day-to-day housing is usually handled by councils).

    • Support charities, community groups, and local campaigns by giving them a voice in Parliament.

    • Help cut through red tape if you feel you are being treated unfairly by a government body.

  • What MP's can't help with

  • There are limits to what MPs can do. They cannot:

    • Intervene in individual legal cases (including ongoing court matters or police investigations).

    • Deal with private disputes (e.g. with a neighbour, employer, landlord, or company).

    • Replace the role of councils — MPs don’t run local services like waste collection, schools, housing allocations, or road repairs. These are usually for your local councillor.

    • Handle issues with the Scottish Parliament, Welsh Senedd, or Northern Ireland Assembly (devolved matters like education, transport, housing, most health services).

    • Offer financial or legal advice — though they may signpost you to organisations that can.

    • Influence decisions of the courts or planning authorities (e.g. planning permission applications).
